Food at Blue Sky

Nursery Meals

At Blue Sky mealtimes are social occasions where the children sit together to eat. All meals are freshly prepared each day by our nursery cook and we aim to provide a healthy balanced diet with strong emphasis on fruit and vegetables.

During the day we offer the following meals:

  • Breakfast
  • Morning snack
  • Lunch
  • Afternoon snack
  • Tea

Children have free access to water throughout the day and are offered milk as an alternative at each meal.

We have seasonal menus which operate on a five-weekly rotation. our menus are created by our Culinary team, who work together across all settings to spread new ideas and provide consistency.

Breakfast

From Open until 8:30

Our Breakfasts consist of a choice of cereal and toast.

Our cereal options include; Cornflakes, Rice Krispies, and Weetabix. We offer Jam and Butter for our toast.

We know that Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. For this reason we ensure all our children coming in for breakfast time have had something to eat in the morning. We may do this by asking parents if their child has eaten at home, when you drop off.

Lunch

11:45 until 12:30

For our lunches we offer seasonal food chosen with the eat well plate in mind, because for us Lunch is the main meal we offer.

Our lunches are curated to be both healthy and delicious. and are freshly cooked each day. To achieve this our Culinary team uses our kitchen to make meals fitting with the eat well plate.

We have meals ranging from roast dinner in the winter to chicken supreme in the summer. All meals include carbohydrates, proteins, vegetable and dairy (with exceptions).

Dinner

16:00 until 16:20

Our Tea is designed to take the pressure off of our parents, as we understand that you may not want to be cooking up a large meal after a long day at work. We are aware that many parents may still want to have the social time of family tea.

For that reason our tea is chosen to see them through to collection, but not always until bed time.

We have teas ranging from beans on toast, or jacket potatoes, to sandwiches or pasta. and an array of puddings.

Morning and Afternoon Snack

Offered to the children at 10am and 3pm

At snack time we offer the children the chance to pick what they have and how much they want. This introduces food choices for the children in a small way.

Our snack platter includes a range of choices, which changes daily to give them a wide array of choice, and is based on healthy eating plate.

The children are offered:

  • A carbohydrate such as; Bread sticks, Rice cake, or Crackers
  • A selection of fruits from apples and bananas to melon and cherries. We use this to give children a chance at trying fruits they may not have had at home.
  • An option of vegetable sticks such as; pepper, cucumber, and carrots.
  • Some protein this will be one option they can choose if they want or not. Our protein option can range from boiled eggs, to ham, or even dips such as Hummus.
  • At snack time we give children the option of what they want to drink, they can choose between water or milk (dairy free options will be available).

We are strong believers that healthy food make healthy children and having a snack they choose will encourage them to choose healthy options

Health Pack Ups Guidelines

Pack ups, while a parent’s choice and responsibility, should help promote a healthy balanced diet and as such the following rules apply:

  • All meals which should be provided in a named cool bag with a cool block (we do not have fridge space available to store pack up bags)
  • Each meal must be separately packed, and each pack must clearly state which meal in within (the team cannot take time to determine which pack to give the children at each meal)
  • There should be no hot/warm food or food which requires heating (due to environmental health issues)

Nursery will provide milk for cereal and to drink along with water through the day

Why Pack Ups Have Requirements

The insulated bags and ice packs are imperative for keeping the food to a sufficiently cold standard to ensure the children do not get food poisoning!

We at Blue Sky take the food hygiene standards very seriously and at the present have a grade 5 rating.

Each meal has its own set of requirements, which are listed below:

Breakfast
  • Cornflakes
  • Rice Krispies
  • Weetabix
  • Whole meal bread
Lunch

Protein such as

  • meat
  • cheese
  • egg

Carbohydrates such as

  • rice
  • pasta
  • potatoes
  • whole meal bread

Some Greens such as

  • Fruit
  • Salad
  • vegetables
Tea

Carbohydrates such as

Some Greens such as

Pack Ups Must NOT Include

These pack ups must not contain crisps, juice, pop, sweets, chocolate or other high salt or sugar level elements to keep in line with the nursery’s healthy eating program.

NO NUTS AT ALL, OR TRACES OF NUTS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

If we find nuts or traces of nuts in any of the food items supplied the result will be that the child is immediately switched to the consumables contract from that date.

Forgetting Your Consumables

All consumables on the list must be provided for each session.

If a parent forgets to include all items or does not supply the food items in an insulated bag/box with frozen ice packs no child will be expected to miss out instead the standard consumables charge will be applied for their session.

As it is not realistic for the childcare team to act as consumables monitor on an ongoing basis we will need to transfer parents across onto the consumables contract after the second incident of a consumable item being forgotten.
